OK, so converting Doc files into text probably isn't something you'll need to perform every day. (If it is, maybe you need to get out more!)

Very likely it's a sudden, immediate kind of need - possibly as a result of a request from your boss. Suddenly, you're given a pile of Word format "doc" files that have to be converted into regular, old fashioned text files (the ones with the .txt extension). The thing is, Microsoft Word adds all sorts of formatting and other things to make your documents "what you see is what you get" and chances are that you need just the raw information from the files.

To make matters worse, they are needed straight away. Right now. Immediately.

If there are only two or three files to convert then the easiest way is to use Word's "Save as" function. That works OK although Word will warn you every single time that you're about to lose all the formatting. Sure. OK. That's what you asked the software to do. Same thing you asked last time as well. The darned program just won't take no for an answer.

But what happens if you've got 10's00's or 1,000's of doc files to convert?

Word's macro option might work for you. Of course, us mere mortals will more likely take the next hour or two in a vain attempt to get the Word macro to actually work.

Far and away the simplest way to convert a folder or CD full of Doc files is to use a program like Doc2Text. If you can drag and drop files in Windows, you can convert files to your heart's content. Super fast - in my test, about 150 files every 60 seconds.

You can find other programs that will perform the same job. But the price of them is much, much higher. You can check out Doc2Text for free here.
